Course Description
Learn the principles of landscape design through an examination of historical influences and evolutionary changes. Through an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process, you will be introduced to the graphic hand-drawing techniques needed to produce landscape drawings, the foundation for landscape design projects.
The complete design process—including how to conduct a site analysis and select and arrange appropriate plant material and built features—will be covered through a series of assignments.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the influence of culturally-diverse historic gardens on landscape design
- Identify important designers and predominant landscape styles
- Describe and apply the principles and elements of landscape design
- Describe and apply each step of the landscape design process on a residential project
- Evaluate the design requirements of a residential landscape
- Select building materials and plant types to meet function, aesthetic, hardiness and site requirements
- Draw simple residential landscape plans and elevations
- Describe and apply landscape design styles
- Describe and apply softscape planting units
- Recognize the trends, and environmental and ecological impact of landscaped gardens

Additional Requirements
- This course is intended for adult learners who are at least 18 years of age.
- There are no prerequisites for this course.
- You can expect to spend 8 to 12 hours per week to complete the course content, readings, activities, discussions and assignments.
Landscape Design I and Ecological Design complete an area of focus in Landscape Design.
Landscape Design l is a required course in the Landscape Design Certificate/Diploma.
Do not enrol in this course if you have successfully completed Designing the Landscape (310-0005) OR Landscape Design I (310-0002).
