Course Description

Two horses with loaded packs on their back standing in front of snow-topped mountains

Global Perspectives in Equid Welfare takes students through the different welfare issues of domesticated and wild equids. The course explores different activities in which equids are involved across the globe while considering the social, legal, and economic factors underlying these practices.

Students will study equid welfare by examining current issues of wild horse management, working horses in developing countries, welfare issues in donkeys and mules, racing and sport horse practices, slaughter legislation, unwanted horses and equine rescue facilities, and a comparison of the different equine management practices used around the world. Current advances and key persons in equid research will be discussed, as well as policy development and the legislation covering equids in different countries.

Students will be able to knowledgeably discuss equine welfare and their role in sustainable development in any situation and be part of a worldwide move toward encouraging and supporting positive welfare states.
