The Certificate in Laboratory Animal Medicine - Canada is designed to provide continuing education, and applied training and experience for licensed veterinarians working in the field of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Laboratory animal medicine is a broad discipline that encompasses all research animals used in science, including, but not limited to, use of rodents, rabbits, nonhuman primates, dogs, cats, agricultural species, fish, birds, wildlife, etc.

About the Certificate in Laboratory Animal Medicine - Canada

The Certificate in Laboratory Animal Medicine is the only formal online and applied placement program in the world specifically geared to laboratory animal veterinarians.

The Certificate consists of four courses

  • Online “Theory” course
  • Three applied courses consisting of one week placements at regional training centres.

Applied placements are located at nationally accredited regional biomedical research facilities (including universities, research intensive hospitals, not-for-profit research organizations, contract research organizations, and pharmaceutical facilities) across Canada. Participants are mentored by professional staff in research facilities, observe practices related to the discipline, and learn skills and techniques that will build on their current knowledge of veterinary medicine.

The Certificate in Laboratory Animal Medicine is recognized by both the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Medicine and the Canadian Council on Animal Care.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Certificate, successful participants in the Certificate in Laboratory Animal Medicine will be able to:           

  • Demonstrate entry-level laboratory animal medicine competencies to meet current biomedical research needs of the research community that they serve.
  • Review, appraise and make necessary adjustments to the overall institutional animal care and use program to ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal oversight requirements.
  • Establish and develop training activities for research personnel to enhance competency and promote refinement of animal use.

Program Requirements

The program is open to licensed veterinarians only. The Certificate is issued upon successful completion of the “Theory” course and three applied placements within two years of enrolment. 


By the end of this program, you will have acquired the necessary entry-level competencies (skills, knowledge and attitudes) to provide high quality professional services to the research community. This will include proficiency in performing a range of clinical techniques, document reviews, information searches, and ethical decision-making tasks necessary for effective job performance.
