Course Description
Horse nutrition is an essential part of a horse's health, reproduction and performance, yet it often remains guided by mysterious concoctions and formulas which are often a detriment to a horse's health. This advanced course recognizes that feeding decisions can be complex and the advances in nutritional research and evolving horse management practices provide an opportunity to design nutritional plans based on current research and evidence-based practice optimizing your horse's overall health and performance. Advanced Equine Health through Nutrition will build your knowledge by improving the way you find and analyze information based on defensible evidence and apply that knowledge to the development of nutritional plans.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Use research to identify new developments and emerging issues in equine nutrition and how they support health, welfare and nutrition in the horse.
- Assess, evaluate, and develop feeding programs for specialized populations using current research and evidence-based practice to optimize the health and performance of horses, and to develop a higher level of knowledge about equine nutrition.
- Discuss the use of functional foods by examining and analyzing new research findings to improve equine health through nutritional approaches.
- Reflect on and consider how the current challenges of the industry will influence the future of the industry with an eye on a solution-oriented approach for equine nutritional issues.
- Improve personal knowledge by researching nutrition-related topics, focused on one aspect of nutrition and how it relates to one of the disorders discussed in the class.
- Research and develop a nutrition management plan in response to one of the disorders discussed in the class.

Additional Requirements
- This course is intended for adult learners who are at least 18 years of age.
- To register for this course you will have completed an Equine Nutrition course through the University of Guelph Equine Studies program, or at another post-secondary school (college or university). If your prerequisite is from an alternate university please contact our office to receive approval.
- You do not need access to a horse to participate and be successful in this course.
- You can expect to spend 10 - 12 hours per week to complete the course material, discussions and assignments. Plan to be on the course website at least 3 - 5 times per week to keep up-to-date and on schedule with weekly assignments, activities, and discussions.
- You may take this course individually or as part of the Equine Welfare Certificate.
