Course Description

This course describes species and cultivars of turfgrasses and their establishment, maintenance, nutrition and soil requirements.  Weed, insect and disease identification and management are also discussed.  The course is specifically designed for golf course superintendents and employees wishing to gain an understanding of the golf course environment and improve skills needed to offer superior playing conditions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Analyze the various benefits of maintained turfgrasses;
  2. Identify various cool-season turfgrass species using a dichotomous key;
  3. Explain the importance of soils and their role in turfgrass growth and development;
  4. Describe the benefits of sodding and seeding for establishing turfgrass stands;
  5. Analyze proper management practices including mowing, irrigation, cultivation and fertilization;
  6. Discuss the environmental impact of fertilization of turfgrass stands;
  7. Differentiate between abiotic and biotic stressors; and
  8. Describe the most commonly occurring insect pests and diseases on turfgrasses.
