Course Description

This course provides an overview of weed management in horticultural situations. It focuses on an integrated approach to weed management using a combination of preventive, cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical methods of weed control. It emphasizes weed identification and knowledge of weed life cycles to allow informed decisions to be made about weed problems.

Course Equivalent

Weed Management for Horticulture' has been deemed an equivalent to the course 'Weed Management in Turf'. Students who successfully complete this course can apply it to the Horticulturist Certificate and or the Maintaining Golf Courses Certificate.

Learners wanting to take an integrated approach to weed management in public and private landscapes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to: 

  1. Recall and apply information and related skills regarding weed biology, weed identification, methods of weed control, herbicide activity and weed management;
  2. Repeat and analyze aspects of weed life cycles that are relevant to their control (i.e. methods of reproduction, time of emergence and persistence);
  3. Summarize methods of weed identification involving 50 weeds commonly found in horticultural crops;
  4. Compare basic methods of weed control:  cultural, chemical, mechanical and biological; and
  5. Integrate the various methods of weed control by designing a weed management program for a number of horticultural crops.
