Course Description

Commercial Greenhouse Crop Production details the propagation, cultural and environmental requirements of the major commercial crops in the greenhouse floriculture and vegetable industry. The principles of photoperiod, breaking dormancy and graphical tracking, as they relate to certain crops, will be studied. The major crops discussed include; roses, alstroemeria, chrysanthemums, poinsettia and Easter lilies, gerbera, mini roses, bedding plants, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. By the end of the course you should be able to not only define the cultural requirements of specific crops, but also be able to apply general production principles to other crops.

Nursery and greenhouse personnel interested in effectively growing healthy crops while generating a financial return.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Define the cultural requirements of specific crops and also apply general practices to other crops;
  2. Name and classify the major and minor commercial floriculture crops available on the market;
  3. Define environmental conditions required for successful production of specific crops;
  4. Interpret the cultural practices required for production and post-harvest quality of specific crops;
  5. Apply general cultural principles to the growth and production of other crops;
  6. Predict how a specific crop will respond to a change in its culture and/or environment; and
  7. Describe the procedural steps to produce a specific crop from propagation to market.
