Course Description

Ecological sustainability and stewardship minimize the ecological impact upon the landscape. This course will explore and discuss philosophies and practices that promote the creation of ecological communities in designed landscapes and suggest how natural systems and human environments can best interact through meaningful design. Students will learn techniques to promote sustainability while offering a strong aesthetic solution and a landscape that functions with a desired purpose.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the key elements and principles of a sustainable landscape;
  2. Describe the opportunities and constraints of sustainable landscapes in your region;
  3. Demonstrate use of design strategies that are common in the creation of designed landscapes;
  4. Compare sustainable landscape design with conventional landscape design;
  5. Define, discuss and record sustainable landscape materials and products as a resource list;
  6. Demonstrate your sustainable design knowledge by developing a sustainable landscape plan, incorporating important design logic, insight and graphical representations.
