Course Description

This non-degree program, SEDA accredited, certificate will appeal to participants who are interested in enhancing their ability and competency in the scholarship of teaching and learning. With the underlying philosophy of developing teacher-scholars (Boyer, 1991), at the heart of the certificate is a framework of collaborative, inquiry-based learning. Over three consecutive courses taken in a one-year time frame, students enrolled in the certificate will collaboratively research a question in the scholarship of teaching and learning and publicly share their findings. The inquire certificate models the research process in the scholarship of teaching and learning. The first course focuses on the development of a research question, the consideration of methodologies and ethical questions and the articulation of a research proposal. The second course focuses on conducting the proposed research. The third course analyzes and consolidates research findings in the form of a publicly shared, peer-reviewed conference presentation. With attention to the authentic experience of conducting the scholarship of teaching and learning, the inquire certificate is designed to be collaborative and inquiry-based. Recognizing the value of collaborative technologies, the inquire certificate is a blended-learning offering, allowing participants to make the best use of face-to-face and online learning opportunities. As the certificate is cohort based, the three courses must be taken in sequence and during a one-year time frame. Participants who successfully complete the program of study will leave the program with the following: Non-degree program certificate in University Teaching & Scholarship, offered by Open Learning and Educational Support (OpenEd) at the University of Guelph Named award in Enhancing Research Practice, accredited by the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) Peer-reviewed conference presentation Certificate Framework The certificate is comprised of the following three courses*: Foundations and Frameworks in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conducting the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Communicating Findings in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning *All three courses must be completed in sequence to be awarded the certificate.
