Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the art and techniques of French-English translation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Read various forms of written French language;
  2. Write in French using an appropriate style for the context (conversation, literary, academic);
  3. Identify and describe the different levels of French language in oral and written contexts;
  4. Translate discreet sentences and an informative or literary text from French to English;
  5. Describe and apply the translation techniques of traduction litérale, calque, emprunt, transposition, modulation, équivalence, adaptation; and
  6. Articulate the advantages and disadvantages of using machine translation and identify its proper uses.
