Course Description

The Canadian National Centre for Supplemental Instruction (SI) is now offering an online version of our popular Certified Canadian SI Supervisor Training, developed in consultation with the International Center for Supplemental Instruction.

What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction is a non-remedial service offered for free to all students in a course. SI supports students’ academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.” SI consists of regularly scheduled, voluntary, out-of-class group study sessions driven by students’ needs. Sessions are facilitated by trained peer leaders who utilize collaborative activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction in small groups. SI is implemented in high-risk courses in consultation with academic staff and is supported and evaluated by a trained supervisor.

Purpose:

  • To increase retention within targeted historically difficult courses
  • To improve student grades in targeted historically difficult courses
  • To increase the graduation rates of students

What is Certified Canadian SI Supervisor Training?

Certified Canadian SI Supervisor Training offers participants a first-hand experience of the Supplemental Instruction model and an orientation to working in SI in Canada. Trainers will demonstrate core techniques to facilitate study groups so participants can develop a shared understanding of these skills and practice using them for online or face to face SI. Come prepared to participate, work in groups and ask questions; leave with the skills and resources to develop, supervise, and manage an SI program at your campus.

This hybrid training will include::

  • 4 hours per week asynchronous course content and activities on CourseLink (D2L) learning management system.
  • Four 4h synchronous sessions on Zoom, including 1h of breaks.  These sessions will reinforce the CourseLink content through collaborative learning and assessment activities with trainers and co-participants.

All training components must be completed in the week assigned to meet SI Supervisor Training certification requirements.  Please block time into your calendar before the course begins to avoid scheduling challenges.
