Course Description

Successful animal production relies on the feed supply consistently meeting the nutritional requirements of the animals, ensuring their health and welfare at a reasonable cost.

Examine the principles of feed formulation, the nutritional requirements of common livestock species, and how nutritional specifications are determined. Consider the multiple factors which affect the formulation, including feed ingredient availability, animal life stage, palatability of feed, market trends, and environmental impacts. Analyze and distinguish different diets based on the principles of least-cost formulation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Outline the purpose(s) of formulating feed.
  2. Summarize/describe how nutrient requirements are established and where reference values can be found.
  3. Understand the difference between minimum nutritional requirements and requirements for optimal growth and production.
  4. Outline the types of feed that could be formulated and in what instances they would be used.
  5. Describe the factors that must be considered when developing a feed formulation.
  6. Summarize the principles of least-cost formulation as well as the advantages and limitations of this formulation method.
