Course Description

Each of the Applied Laboratory Animal Medicine modules is a one-week placement at a regional training centre, acquiring a number of skills. The regional training centres are assessed by the Canadian Council on Animal care and hold Good Animal Practice (GAP) certificates.

The Certificate in Laboratory Animal Medicine is recognized by both the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Medicine and the Canadian Council on Animal Care.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the applied placements, the successful participant will be able to:

  • Identify the diverse roles of the laboratory animal veterinarian in Canadian research settings.
  • Efficiently seek and extract information from a range of human and inanimate resources to effectively solve problems in their home institution related to laboratory animal medicine.
  • Proficiently perform a range of clinical techniques, document reviews, and ethical decision-making tasks necessary for effective job performance.
  • Establish and develop training activities for research teams to enhance competency and promote refinement of animal use.
  • Apply a range of techniques and practices to effectively communicate with facility personnel and research teams.
  • Review and appraise the overall institutional animal care and use program to ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal oversight requirements.
