Course Description

This course covers swine handling and restraint techniques of pigs in different ages, weighing, facility procedures, biosecurity, management, and husbandry. Factors to ensure good animal welfare, safety, health assessment and euthanasia will be discussed. It also provides important information that is mandatory for all new principal investigators, researchers, students, visitors, volunteers, and animal care personnel seeking access to the animal facility. The Orientation component gives a walk-through in all swine housing areas. It covers unit layout and use (housing vs. procedure rooms), room entry and exit procedures, animal health monitoring, documentation, and communication (Logs, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)) and Animal Utilization Protocols (AUP), and information on regulatory inspections and Animal Care Committee (ACC) site visits.
Participants are provided online Courselink material, which will be accessible after 24 hours of registration. This material must be reviewed prior to attending this session so that the participant is prepared to take a short quiz or to be evaluated at the time of the session.

- Please ensure you have completed or started the compulsory online course “Core Modules, Animal Care”. This course is a prerequisite for being listed on the Animal Utilization Protocol (AUP).
