Overview

The Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate provides research and evidence-based perspectives on supporting and adopting a plant-based diet.

Learn how you can achieve the nutrients you need for optimum health and the management and prevention of disease while implementing a plant-based diet.

Examine the historical and contemporary perspectives and the impact of plant-based diets on individuals and the planet. Delve into the nutritional composition of plant-based diets, their functional components, and their ability to meet individual needs throughout the lifespan, in relation to health and disease prevention.

By participating in the program you will be able to implement a plant-based diet, provide information to others, and address common concerns in starting and following a plant-based diet.

This is an online, asynchronous program of short courses. Each course is four weeks in length and consists of 20 hours of coursework.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Examine current research and evidence-based practices to define plant-based diets and their impact on dietary choices, individuals and the environment
  • Identify nutritional requirements of plant-based diets and their role in health and well-being
  • Examine the relationship between diet and disease and the role of plant-based diets in disease prevention
  • Discuss how social, economic, political and environmental factors affect food production and availability, and contribute to the development of food policy and public health approaches to dietary recommendations
  • Compare nutritional requirements of plant-based diets at various life stages and for specialized audiences and discuss the implications for implementing plant-based diets
  • Apply plant-based nutritional knowledge to selecting and preparing foods in plant-based diets

Details

The Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate consists of online asynchronous courses. Each course is four weeks in length and the equivalent of 20 hours of class time. You can expect to spend 5 - 6 hours per week completing the readings, activities, discussions and assessment for the course. Courses are facilitated by an instructor.

Introduction to Plant-Based Diets should be taken as the first course. The remaining required and elective courses can be taken in any order. You may take as many or as few courses as you choose. There is no requirement to register for the certificate.

You are not expected to travel to campus, and there are no required times to be online.

Enrolment is on a course-by-course basis and there is no application required. This program is intended for adult learners who are at least 18 years of age. Course availability changes each semester. It is recommended you submit notification requests for each course in the program to be informed when registration opens. Joining the Email Updates list will provide you with updates on the current course offerings.

Complete five required courses and two elective courses. Request your parchment through the OpenEd Student Portal once all requirements are met.

Students progress through the certificate at their own pace. You can complete the certificate in as little as one year and take a maximum of five years to complete the certificate requirements.
