Course Description

View from behind a cinema audience

The course is designed to give the student knowledge and understanding of contemporary cinematic expression. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Critically analyze the various elements of film, and appropriate apply these critical skills to other texts, as well as in everyday life.
  2. Analyze films (in components or in whole) using discipline-specific terminology and vocabulary, error free and concisely, in a variety of formats (writing, discussion, etc...).
  3. Apply the structure and features of proper argumentation in writing or in discussions as it pertains to film analysis.
  4. Explain the cultural, social, and ideological implications of feature film production, specifically blockbusters, in the context of the contemporary period.
  5. Analyze the primary technical and aesthetic elements of film production, specifically blockbusters.

Please Note: 6 films are required for viewing within this course: Jaws (Spielberg, 1975), Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (Lucas, 1977), Back to the Future (Zemeckis, 1985), Independence Day (Emmerich, 1996), Mad Max: Fury Road (Miller, 2015) and Barbie (Gerwig, 2023). Most films can be found on Ares. If not, you may be able to access the films through: a local library, iTunes*, Netflix*, Disney+*, or shomi*. *Be sure to read the terms and conditions of use.
