Course Description

This course focuses on providing students with essential knowledge related to career development and planning to help support a successful transition to the workforce. With a focus on mentorship and networking strategies, students will learn the value of seeking guidance from professionals in their field, fostering meaningful connections, and leveraging relationships to enhance their personal and professional growth. Students will also explore the importance of mental well-being and diversity, equity, and inclusion in a career context.  By the end of the course, students will develop a clearer understanding of their career aspirations, and be equipped with the tools to proactively pursue their goals with confidence.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:
  1. Reflect on personal strengths, weaknesses, values, interests, and goals and how they influence career planning;
  2. Practice effective resume and cover letter writing techniques;
  3. Identify strategies for presenting oneself professionally and confidently during interviews;
  4. Develop effective networking strategies for initiating and maintaining professional connections to support long-term mentorship opportunities;
  5. Identify and develop strategies for reframing failures as valuable learning experiences and using them to inform future career decisions and actions;
  6. Examine systemic barriers and inequities within the workplace, such as unequal access to resources, opportunities for advancement, and representation in leadership roles, and recognize their role in advocating for change; and
  7. Explain the importance of lifelong career planning and adaptability in a changing job market.
