Course Description

Knowing how to manage and protect information that is collected, used, and stored is increasingly important. The course examines the foundational components of a records and information management program and how it plays an important role in ensuring organizations have the information, processes, and technology that they need to be effective and efficient, including responding to requests for access to information.

While more broadly applicable, examples from education (e.g., school boards, higher education) and municipalities are utilized. Regardless of your background, you are invited to bring your knowledge and experience to the learning environment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the relationship between privacy, access, and records and information management (RIM)
  • Explain the key concepts of RIM
  • Accurately interpret and successfully apply the principles of RIM to comply with legislation and policy. 4. Identify and describe the components of an effective RIM program
  • Identify and respond to risks and implications of non-compliance with RIM legislation and policy
  • Recognize and incorporate RIM best practices
  • Recognize societal changes that impact RIM and be prepared to respond appropriately
  • Demonstrate leadership skills and abilities that support and advance people and work in RIM

  • Key RIM Concepts (e.g., records lifecycle, information governance, records inventory, classification systems, record types and their value)
  • Components of an Effective RIM Program (e.g., active records management, retention and disposition, electronic records, inactive records management, vital records and disaster recovery, and training and education)
  • RIM Risks and Implications of Non-Compliance
  • RIM Legislation, Policies, Procedures, and Best Practices
  • Societal Changes and the Impact on RIM.
  • Leading in the Field of RIM.
