Course Description

This basic course in French grammar will emphasize listening skills, for students who have up to grade 10 French (or equivalent) but not above. This course is not intended for students with native or near-native ability in French, including Francophones and French immersion students. Students with advanced French may be dropped from the course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  • Understand basic dialogue in French
  • Understand reports on francophone TV
  • Determine the meaning of many oral narratives

  • Ear training; listening for sounds
  • Combining sounds
  • Listening to simple sentences
  • Verbal groups and listening for intonation
  • Simple sentences with conjunctions and relative pronouns
  • Expressions, accentuations and repetitions, fillers
  • How sounds differ
  • What isn’t pronounced
  • Accumulated shortcuts
  • Regional speech

Additional Requirements

Restriction(s): FREN*1100 cannot be counted toward a specialization in French.
