Course Description

This hybrid (in-class with online component) course will examine the complex phenomena known as leadership. Everyone seems to intuitively know what leadership is but every time researchers and practitioners try and define it, the task becomes almost impossible. Extensive research over the past century has resulted in a large body of literature, theories and models that have tried to define leadership and more importantly those qualities and competencies that make for an effective leader. This course uses lectures, case studies, and small group discussions to move beyond the theory and research underlying the subject of leadership and leadership effectiveness to focus on the practical skills, knowledge and techniques that can be adapted and employed right away. This course is designed to be very interactive where participants are encouraged to share their unique background, experiences, and perceptions. Everyone will learn from each other creating a dynamic and expansive learning environment. Participants will leave the course with an increased knowledge and understanding of the components of leadership, leadership theory and practical leadership tools that will enhance their personal leadership abilities and prepare them for the follow-on courses of the MA Leadership program should they wish to continue in the MA Leadership program.
