Course Description

This course provides an overview of sport management and leadership concepts and an introduction to the different contexts of sport including the youth, community and scholastic sport and recreation, professional, and international sport. Topics covered include the history of sport management, the relevance and practice of managerial and leadership concepts within sport, diversity and ethical issues in sport, and sustainability practices in sport.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:
  1. Explain sport management and the broad scope of opportunities in the sport industry;
  2. Evaluate major challenges within the sport industry through identifying trends and their impact on the industry;
  3. Explain the relevance of ethical, legal, and sociological concepts to the management of sport;
  4. Apply introductory knowledge of management, leadership, and organizational behavior theories to sport enterprises; and
  5. Discuss the importance of diversity, gender equity, and an inclusive approach to management of sport.

Course Topics

  • The history and development of sport management
  • The different levels and structure of sport (e.g., community/school sport, amateur and professional sport)
  • The key areas of sport management will be covered: Sport marketing, facility management, sport finance
  • Legal and ethical issues in sport management
